From Beijing to the World: How Foton Motor Powers Global Commercial Transport
For nearly three decades, Foton Motor has been engineering commercial vehicles that move the world. Established on August 28, 1996, and headquartered in Beijing, China, the company has grown into one of the most influential commercial vehicle manufacturers on the planet. Its product lineup spans medium and heavy-duty trucks, light-duty trucks, mini trucks, vans, pickups, buses, and construction machinery vehicles.
A pivotal chapter in Foton’s history began in 2006, when the company entered into a landmark 50/50 joint venture with global engine leader Cummins. This partnership, sealed in Beijing, would lay the foundation for world-class powertrain manufacturing. By 2008, the joint venture — officially named Beijing Foton Cummins Engine Co. Ltd — was established with a substantial investment of RMB 2.7 billion. By 2009, the facility was fully operational, producing the ISF2.8L and ISF3.8L engines and delivering an annual output of 400,000 units, making it China’s largest light-duty engine manufacturing base.
The global significance of this collaboration was underscored in 2014, when former US Secretary of State John Kerry toured the Foton Cummins facility — a testament to the company’s role as a bridge between Chinese manufacturing excellence and international standards.
Foton Motor’s ambitions extend well beyond powertrains. In 2016, the company established a joint venture with ZF, a renowned transmission specialist. The partnership manufactures automatic transmissions boasting up to 99.7% efficiency — a benchmark that reflects Foton’s commitment to performance and sustainability.
Connectivity and environmental responsibility define Foton’s vision for the future. In 2017, the company signed a strategic cooperation agreement on green and intelligent trucks at the US-China Energy Efficiency Forum, reinforcing its dedication to pioneering low-emission commercial transport solutions.
Geographically, Foton’s footprint is impressively global. KD (knocked-down) assembly factories and dedicated parts distribution centers operate across Thailand, Russia, Australia, and Kenya, ensuring reliable support for customers and partners worldwide.
At the forefront of innovation, Foton is actively advancing new energy vehicle technologies — spanning both electric and hydrogen-powered platforms — to meet the evolving demands of the global transport industry.
