How Foton South Africa Climbed to the Top 5 in Medium Trucks — And What It Means for the Local Auto Industry
In under 14 months, Foton South Africa has rewritten the rules of the country’s commercial vehicle market. According to the NAAMSA (National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa) January 2026 new vehicle sales report, the brand has secured two standout positions: 7th in Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) sales and 5th in Medium Commercial Vehicle (MCV) sales — an achievement that has turned heads across the industry.
Foton officially launched in South Africa in late 2024. The speed at which it has gained traction is no accident, according to CEO Marius Smal. ‘These rankings confirm that our product lineup resonates with South African businesses, and that our dealer network has gone above and beyond to build customer trust,’ Smal said.
The brand’s product range spans three key categories. Pickup trucks are anchored by the Tunland family: the Tunland G7 starts at R399,900, the Tunland V7 at R689,900, and the flagship Tunland V9 at R725,900. For operators seeking utility and durability, the commercial lineup offers the Truckmate from R199,900, the Miler from R339,900, the View Panel Van from R449,900, and the Asambe Taxi from R439,900. On the electric side, Foton provides three zero-emission options: the eView Panel Van (from R850,000), the eTruckmate (from R575,000), and the eAumark (from R1,199,900).
Supporting this product offensive is a growing retail footprint. Foton now operates 63 dealerships across South Africa, bringing sales and service closer to commercial operators nationwide. In a further sign of long-term commitment, the company began local vehicle assembly in Gqeberha during Q1 2026, a move designed to reduce lead times and support South Africa’s automotive manufacturing sector.
With a top-five ranking in medium commercial vehicles and a top-seven position in light commercials, Foton’s trajectory suggests it is far from finished in the Rainbow Nation.
