Madagascar’s Public Transit Transformation: 312 Foton Buses Hit Antananarivo Streets After FOCAC 2024 Partnership
When Madagascar set out to modernize its capital city’s public transportation network, it found a trusted partner in Foton Motor. The Chinese commercial vehicle manufacturer recently completed delivery of 312 medium-sized buses to the island nation—a deal widely regarded as among the largest single exports of transit vehicles from China to Africa.
The timing of the agreement carries strategic significance. The buses were delivered in conjunction with the 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), a high-profile diplomatic platform that has increasingly become a gateway for Chinese infrastructure investments across the continent.
Beyond the numbers, the vehicles were engineered to match local operating realities. Each bus was built with a reinforced chassis and a fuel-efficient diesel powerplant, helping operators keep daily running costs down. Passenger comfort was addressed through ergonomic seating arrangements and low-step entry designs that facilitate faster boarding and alighting. Safety features include an ABS anti-lock braking system, while the overall configuration maximizes passenger capacity per unit.
Early feedback from operators on the ground has been positive. Fleet reliability has improved noticeably since the buses entered service, and maintenance expenses have dropped compared to older vehicles in the rotation. To sustain this performance, Foton has taken concrete steps to build local support capacity—a dedicated Parts Distribution Center now operates in Madagascar, and the company conducts ongoing technical training programs for local technicians.
Foton’s ambitions in the country extend further down the road. Plans are underway to explore local assembly operations, which could lower vehicle costs further and create domestic manufacturing jobs. The company is simultaneously working to expand its service network across Madagascar, aiming to provide faster and more comprehensive after-sales support for operators nationwide.
With Antananarivo now home to a modernized bus fleet, the Foton-Madagascar partnership stands as a tangible outcome of the FOCAC 2024 commitments—and a model that could shape similar collaborations across Africa.
